Susannah Porterfield is the Associate Vice Provost for Research. Ms. Porterfield assumed this position in April 2014, newly created in recognition of the importance of enhancing the current collaboration efforts across the institution. Sue manages the development of the Bloomberg Distinguished Professors, supporting the vice provost for research in proposal management, search management, and community support; and guides the development of the Rising to the Challenge Signature Initiatives through collaborative work with the directors of the initiatives. She also devotes effort to other cross-cutting research initiatives tied to the Ten by Twenty.
Before joining the Provost’s Office, Ms. Porterfield worked in the Whiting School of Engineering at Hopkins. Over the last 8 years, she was the Executive Director of the Institute for NanoBioTechnology (INBT), an inter-divisional research institute. Leading the INBT operational efforts since its inception in 2006, gave her broad experience in navigating the challenges and opportunities associated with doing collaborative research across schools. Ms. Porterfield also supervised major multidisciplinary, multi-divisional research and education initiatives at the interface of engineering, life science, and medicine. In that role, she managed a $5 million annual budget and more than 10 staff members.
Prior to coming to Hopkins, Ms. Porterfield worked at Baltimore Gas & Electric as a customer service manager. She has a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Psychology from Grove City College and earned a Master of Science degree in Human Resource Management from Towson University.
