Julie Messersmith

Assistant Vice Provost for Research

Julie Messersmith works collaboratively with the VP and Sr. AVP for Research to oversee the development, strategic planning, and implementation of institution-wide research initiatives that aim to increase interdivisional collaboration and support the individual excellence of Johns Hopkins faculty members. These initiatives include the Bloomberg Distinguished Professorships, Catalyst Awards, Discovery Awards, President’s Frontier Awards, and COVID-19 Research Support Program. She also manages research communications efforts, collaborates with the Office of Federal Affairs to produce Hopkins on the Hill, and led the COVID-19 Research Response Program.

Before joining the Provost’s Office in 2015, Ms. Messersmith worked in Development & Alumni Relations as the assistant director of foundation relations. In this role, she worked with key faculty to source foundation support for their research and collaborated with divisional colleagues in planning significant foundation site visits and presidential meetings with priority organizations such as the Gates, Moore, and Packard Foundations.

Ms. Messersmith previously worked for Vail Resorts Management Company in Colorado and Clairmont Camera Film & Digital, a motion picture camera rental house in California. She earned a bachelor’s degree in International Studies from Pepperdine University, a master’s degree in International Studies (Development, Conflict Resolution & International Security) from the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School, and a master of Liberal Arts degree from Johns Hopkins University.
