External Opportunities

Look beyond Hopkins for experiences and funding

External Opportunities

HOUR is regularly updating our lists and information related to external opportunities. We are happy to meet with interested students prior to submission to review your application, personal statement, and any other materials required or to just discuss options. HOUR wants you to have exceptional experiences that help you move forward with your goals.

We would love to hear from you when you are selected for any program! Send us an email or post on our Facebook page. We love to hear about and shout out your successes!

  • Sponsor deadlines and eligibility are subject to change. Please consult the sponsor website for latest updates. HOUR and JHU are not responsible for these opportunities.
  • For opportunities noted as a ‘limited submission’ that means JHU can only submit a limited number of applicants. Please contact the Research Development Team (RDT) for details.

Summer REU Opportunities (STEM fields)

REUs (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) are funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and offer students the opportunity to participate in paid research experiences in STEM fields over the summer months at colleges, universities, and laboratories across the U.S.

  • The REU database is searchable by topic, research areas/ key words, or by state.
  • Programs are generally limited to US citizens, permanent residents or US nationalsOccasionally a host institution may have additional funding allowing international students to participate (check each opportunity individually).
  • Students receive stipends, housing, and often help with travel expenses.
  • Programs generally run for 10-weeks over the summer.
  • Programs are within STEM fields, including laboratory, field, social science and educational research areas.
  • REUs are HIGHLY competitive with each program receiving hundreds of applications for an average of ten positions available per program.
